Players are dropped into a new and exciting, but very dangerous, world at the beginning of LEGO® Fortnite®. You’ll need to quickly find ways to become more powerful, defend yourself and fight back against everything that goes bump in the night. Not to mention the baddies that also go thump in the day!
So if you’d like to make it longer than a few minutes in LEGO Fortnite’s Survival mode, you’ll need to learn about weapons and Charms.
We’re here to help get you started, and before long you’ll know how to craft powerful items that will help you explore your surroundings and collect the materials you’ll need to thrive in this new environment. So let’s get started learning about, finding and crafting the items that will make you as powerful as possible.
Getting Started with Weapons and Charms
Your journey to the most useful weapons and Charms begins at a simple place: Your Crafting Bench.
The good news is the Crafting Bench is unlocked after you build your Campfire, and it’s one of the first items you’ll want to add to your settlement in LEGO Fortnite. So collect 3 Wood and 5 Granite and build a Crafting Bench somewhere in your Village.
Place it carefully! The Crafting Bench is where you’ll be crafting your weapons and Charms throughout the game, so make sure you place yours in a handy place, especially since you can’t use Crafting Benches in the rain!
You’ll soon also find that everything is connected in the universe of LEGO Fortnite, so building up your settlement will help you get to the weapons and Charms that you’ll need to survive and thrive. Your Crafting Bench can’t do much during the first hours of play, but what if you build a Lumber Mill next in your settlement as well? You’ll find that the crafting recipes for your first Sword and Shield have been unlocked at the Crafting Bench!
If you’d like to craft a Recurve Crossbow, it’s as easy as building a Spinning Wheel to create all the necessary materials, and the weapon will be unlocked in the Crafting Bench. Be ready to track down plenty of Feathers from chickens around your settlement to craft Arrows.
Craft one of each, and you can attack enemies at close range and from far away, as well as defend yourself from their attacks against you. Remember to equip your shield in the off-hand slot in your inventory screen. It’s not held in the same hand as your Sword or Crossbow!
You’ll also notice that weapons, like other gear, have their own durability meter that goes down with use. So every time you swing that sword and hit something, or fire your crossbow, you’re using up a bit of its utility. Save your weapons for when you really need them, and make sure you have some extras in your inventory so you don’t find yourself alone and defenseless when your last Sword, Shield or Crossbow breaks during combat. Remember: You don’t just have to worry about what you need now, but also how many you’ll need on your adventures before you return to a settlement. It’s important to plan ahead.
Now that you’ve taken the first steps in your journey to unlock and craft more powerful versions of these items, you’re ready to continue to build up your Village to unlock upgraded Swords, Shields and Crossbows.

What About Charms and Totems?
Oh right, we said we’d talk about weapons and Charms! Weapons will help you fight and survive, but why do you need to worry about Charms and Totems?
While you start your journey in LEGO Fortnite with only three hearts, sensitivity to both heat and cold and the need to eat regularly to keep yourself from starving, you can increase your total health, resilience to the elements and even bring yourself back from the dead with the right Charms and Totems. They’re an important part of your character build and strategy.
Charms are created at the Crafting Bench, just like weapons, and each one will enhance your character in some way. You may get more hearts, gain protection against the cold or heat or get revived if you fall in battle. You don’t want to face the challenges of LEGO Fortnite without a good selection of Charms in your inventory, buffing your abilities and power!
You can carry up to three Charms at once, so it’s important to think ahead about which Charms you want to craft, and which ones you should take with you on your adventures. Different areas of the world will benefit from the use of different Charms, so the more you unlock and upgrade, the better your chances out there.
And you won’t have to wait for long! The first Health Charm becomes available when you build the Crafting Bench and collect a Shell from fighting one of the rolling enemies around your Village. Easy enough! Once the Health Charm recipe is unlocked, just collect the necessary materials to craft it and you’ll gain one heart and one armor.
Future Charms become unlocked as you reach certain points in the game, continue to upgrade and add more crafting stations to your settlement and find new ingredients. You’ll also want to upgrade the Crafting Bench to its highest possible level to max out your access to the most powerful Charms.
