How LEGO® bricks gave Gracie the dog a new lease on life

How LEGO® bricks gave Gracie the dog a new lease on life

Dogs are companions for life. They’re always there for us when we need them most, and we do our best to return the favor. This is certainly the case for fifteen-year-old Dylan, an amazing boy who volunteers at Mostly Mutts, an animal rescue center in Kennesaw, Georgia.

“I like a lot of things about dogs...the company, how they’re almost like your own friend.”

One day, an adorable puppy named Gracie came into the shelter missing two front legs. She was in need of some serious help.

Despite his young age, Dylan was determined to do something about it.

He put on his problem-solving hat and realized that LEGO® bricks could be the answer.

“Dog wheelchairs are extremely expensive,” said Dylan’s mom Emily, “and we figured using the LEGO bricks we could extend the wheelchair as she grew.”

Using his creativity for the greater good, Dylan worked hard to invent a functional wheelchair out of LEGO bricks, injecting plenty of color and personality into the build – a cost-effective solution that could be extended over time.

“I found it challenging because you have to make sure every single piece is almost perfect.”

Soon after, Gracie was given a new lease on life and was able to explore again with the help of her new wheelchair. It was a pawesome victory for both Dylan and Gracie.

“If she didn’t get a wheelchair, it would’ve been harder for her to live her life.”

The rescue and adoption shelter, Mostly Mutts, works to reduce the number of animals euthanized at local shelters in the area, doing all they can to rehabilitate dogs by offering healthcare, training and physical and emotional care for the pups until they’re ready to find a new home.

“If we didn’t get Gracie at our shelter, she would've probably been put to sleep,” said Dylan.

A true act of kindness combined with a whole lot of creativity; Dylan managed to find a way to help get Gracie back on her feet.

“It felt amazing to see that I could help a disabled animal out and see her live a happier life.”

Fast forward a few years and Gracie has now been adopted and lives happily on a farm with plenty of space to roam and other canines to keep her company.

This is just one heartwarming ‘tail’ of a boy who went out of his way to help a fluffy friend.

So, the next time you pick up your LEGO bricks, imagine all the things you can create. You may be able to help someone, just like Dylan who is rebuilding the world one brick at a time...
