Guide to LEGO® Fortnite® Odyssey Caves

A Guide to LEGO® Fortnite® Odyssey Caves

This LEGO® Fortnite® Odyssey guide will help you prepare for adventures underground, outlining what dangers to expect, and what plunder you can hope to bring back. Caves hold some of LEGO Fortnite Odyssey’s greatest challenges, and the rewards will help you craft some of the best equipment and upgrades in the game.

What You’ll Need

Caves vary in size and type, but they all have common properties. Most caves are very dark, so packing Torches to light your way is essential. They can also be expansive, with stone, metal and gemstones you’ll want to mine poking out of the walls and ceiling. Caves often include Wood you can gather on the fly, but having a supply of wood on-hand to build stairs and platforms will make navigation and reaching materials a lot easier. It’s also always a good idea to have plenty of food for healing, especially when you venture into caves that are either very hot or very cold.

How to Find Caves

There’s no surefire way to find a cave except to explore the different biomes and keep your eyes peeled. However, in most LEGO Fortnite Odyssey worlds, caves are fairly plentiful and can be easy to spot from a distance. Look for large, round mounds of gray rock in the Grasslands, Dry Valley and Frostlands biomes. These rock piles have an entrance on one side that’ll let you enter the cave, and getting close to one will mark it on your map with a mountain icon to make it easier to find in the future.

Caves come in all sizes, with some being relatively small and ending in dead ends, and others leading into extensive networks of tunnels and chambers. Big caves often have multiple entrances, too, so if you explore far enough, you might come out of the cave somewhere you don’t expect, far from where you first started.

Grassland Caves

As you climb the tech tree and unlock better gear in the early part of LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, you’ll start needing a crafting material called Knotwood, which will send you into your first caves. Caves in the Grasslands are dark and full of Skeletons, Rock Rollers and Spiders, but you won’t face anything you haven’t already seen when you enter one.

Make sure to bring at least an Uncommon-level Forest Axe and Pickaxe when you head into Grassland caves, as weaker tools can’t cut through the materials you’ll find inside. These caves are home to Knotwood and Marble, which you’ll need to build the tools and equipment necessary to make your way into tougher biomes.

Lava Caves

The desert-like Dry Valley biomes are home to lava caves, which are among the hottest locations you’ll find in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. Though not every cave in the Dry Valley is a lava cave, most of them seem to be, and they’re home to materials that you’ll need throughout the rest of the game as you craft advanced equipment.

To survive the heat underground, stock up on Cool-Headed Charms and remember to pack Snowberries and Snowberry Shakes when making your way into them. Otherwise, the heat of the cave will slowly drain your health.

As the name suggests, lava caves are full of lava, which can help you out by lighting the area with their fiery glow. Touching lava will burn your minifigure for a few seconds, but it does only a few fractions of a heart worth of damage. Since the pain is pretty minimal, don’t be too afraid about falling into lava or jumping into it to traverse a gap or escape enemies.

Lava caves are significantly more dangerous than Grasslands caves thanks to large numbers of enemies inside, including Sand Spiders, Sand Scorpions and Sand Rollers. Some enemies also wield explosives to make your life difficult. Watch out for Mine Skeletons that carry and throw Dynamite. If a bundle of Dynamite lands near you, make sure to clear the area. Defeating these Skeletons is a good way to get Dynamite of your own, however, as well as Blast Powder for making explosives and Toys.

Among the materials found in lava caves, Blast Cores are generally the toughest to come by. You can only get them in two ways: finding them as random loot in treasure chests, or by defeating Blasters. These are a brand of the burrowing, crab-like Roller enemies you’ve encountered elsewhere. Blasters are black and look like rocks, but when they spot you, they’ll chase you relentlessly until they explode. It’s possible to defeat these enemies quickly before they detonate, but you can also just keep clear of them until they blow up on their own.

You’ll also find Rough Copper, Rough Ruby, Obsidian and Bright Cores in lava caves, and you’ll need a Rare Pickaxe or better to mine those materials. Bright Cores in particular are something you’ll want to stock up on whenever you can, as they’re essential for smelting metal to make stronger tools and weapons. You’ll be making a lot of Copper, and later, Iron, so save yourself some repeated trips to the lava caves by mining all you can early.

Ice Caves

Perhaps the most dangerous locations in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey are the ice caves of the Frostlands biomes. They’re as cold as lava caves are hot, but the damaging temperature has the added problem of slowing your movement speed while also damaging you. Bring along at least two Rare Inner Fire Charms and Spicy Burgers to increase your Cold resistance. Building Bonfires as you explore can also help you deal with the cold.

Most of the enemies that make the Frostlands their homes – Frost Rollers, Frost Spiders and Frost Scorpions – also appear in ice caves, along with Mine Skeletons. But the main danger in ice caves are Bone Wolves, a skeleton version of the wolves you’ve seen throughout LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. These enemies hit extremely hard and have a large amount of health, making them second only to Frost Brutes in terms of lethality. Killing them earns you Cursed Bones, which you’ll need for crafting top-tier Charms, so make sure you come with strong weapons or avoid combat until you’re ready.

Ice caves are home to two other high-end materials: Iron and Rough Sapphire. To mine them, you’ll need to bring along an Epic Pickaxe.

The materials you’ll find in caves across LEGO Fortnite Odyssey are essential to crafting the best weapons and tools in the game – and to creating the best village you can. Be sure to prepare, because you’ll find some of the toughest challenges on your island waiting for you underground.
