LEGO® Fortnite® Brick Life Parents’ Guide

LEGO® Fortnite® Brick Life parents’ guide

LEGO Fortnite Brick Life is a new and exciting social roleplay experience where you can build the lifestyle of your choice, hang out with friends and customize your home.

Just like LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, you can download and play LEGO Fortnite Brick Life through the existing Fortnite launcher, Head to the LEGO Fortnite category in Discover and select the LEGO Fortnite Brick Life tile to begin playing.

In this LEGO Fortnite Brick Life guide for parents, we’ll explain the game, show you what your kids can do there and teach you how to customize their experience based on your preferences.

What is LEGO Fortnite Brick Life?

LEGO Fortnite Brick Life is a new social roleplay game that transports players into a city called Brick Bay, where they can create a lifestyle, hang out with others and customize their home. Just like LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, it combines digital representations of the iconic LEGO bricks, elements and minifigures inside Fortnite.

Whereas LEGO Fortnite Odyssey (originally known simply as LEGO Fortnite) takes place in a vast, open world with a variety of biomes to explore and survive, LEGO Fortnite Brick Life takes place in an exciting, existing city, full of buildings, stores, shops and minifigure friends to meet and interact with.

How to play and get started in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life

From players’ first moments in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, they can do many things. But the simplest thing to do is look around, follow their curiosity and explore. There are no wrong choices, but there are a few general ways to interact with the game.

Because LEGO Fortnite Brick Life takes place in a living, breathing, populated city, meeting its minifigure residents is always available. Players are sure to find some cheery, talkative citizens in the courtyard at the Town Square. The conversations they have are designed to introduce them not just to the many personalities but the many possibilities within the game.

Players can meet and befriend non-playable characters, and they can hang out in the town with their real-world friends, too, playing in the same city at the same time. (We’ll discuss the built-in protections for children when playing online below.)

Brick Bay consists of a variety of locations begging to be explored. For example, the expansive downtown is filled with businesses like Durrr Burger, a bank and a movie theater – all of which offer potential job opportunities. A beach coast complete with a concert stage forms the western boundary. To the east, the trees sway in the breeze with the beautiful orange tint of fall, and some of the buildings and characters in that hilly area match the slightly spooky aesthetic.

There are empty plots of land scattered in and around Brick Bay, and players can walk up to the red-and-white for-sale sign to claim one. There they can build a home and decorate it with furniture, lighting, floor mats and other decor to make it their own.

Home ownership requires some work in the real world and in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, and plenty of Brick Bay citizens need players’ help and are happy to pay for it with a special in-game currency that they earn throughout the game. Getting a job — multiple jobs, in fact — is the way for players to get ahead and earn their way to ever-better items.

What are LEGO Kits in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life

LEGO Kits are purely decorative items available for purchase and use in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life. They do not offer any gameplay advantages. As a parent, you can use Epic’s parental controls along with platform-level controls to manage your kids’ real-money purchases.

LEGO Kits are an optional part of LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, and there is plenty of free content in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life. They bundle together special items that aren’t typically available for free, like rare buildings and themed accessories. Players can purchase and share purchased compatible LEGO Kits and their cosmetic add-ons with their friends in both LEGO Fortnite Brick Life and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey.

LEGO Kits include three types of items. We’ll use one of the first LEGO Kits available to explain what they contain.

  • Builds are large items like buildings. The Beachside Boulevard Bundle includes 8 Builds, like a Beach Pavillion, a Beach House and a Lifeguard Tower.
  • Building Parts are the individual parts like the walls, floors and windows that combine to create Builds.
  • Decor items are decorations that match a LEGO Kit’s theme. The Beachside Boulevard Bundle contained 44 Decor items, like beach chairs, surfboards and umbrellas.

To purchase a LEGO Kit, players use V-Bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency. Content purchased with V-Bucks is available on all platforms and devices where you’ve linked the account that made the purchase.

Each LEGO Fortnite Brick Life platform processes its own payments. Purchasing V-Bucks on a PlayStation 5 uses Sony’s system as the payment processor, for example. Android (Google Play), PlayStation®, Xbox, Nintendo Switch™ and Windows have parental controls settings that govern spending options in their ecosystems. Epic Games’ Parental Controls settings help you manage purchases from your child’s account in the Epic Game Store.

Socialize in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life

Having a community of friends and players is the best way to experience the LEGO Fortnite games. In LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, they can cooperate to build, decorate, overcome challenges and even compete with each other in events like races.

LEGO Fortnite Brick Life’s cities allow up to 32 players simultaneously in one world. Depending on the text chat permissions you’ve set for your child’s account, your child can say hello to those they meet who are out and about using text chat!

Fortnite has introduced a new ‘Personal Information’ text chat filter that helps remove certain types of information — like email addresses and credit card numbers — from text chat conversations in real-time. Fortnite has also introduced improvements to the mature language filter to better filter out various kinds of mature language and toxicity. Both filters will always be on for players under 13 in all text chats.

Epic Games and the LEGO Group both expect everyone to play responsibly and follow their rules, which means there is no room for offensive content in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life worlds. If players see something inappropriate in a text chat, for example, we encourage them to report it using the easy-to-use reporting tools, available right in the text chat.

Setting up parental controls in LEGO Fortnite Brick Life

Epic Games gives you control over many features with Parental Controls. The Epic Account Portal gives you access to set up and manage your parental controls online. You can also access them in-game using the Fortnite Parental Controls menu by taking the following steps:

  1. 1. Launch Fortnite.
  2. 2. Open the main menu, and select the gear-shaped icon.
  3. 3. Select ‘Parental Controls’ and enter your six-digit PIN

From here, parents and guardians can customize their child’s experience with age-appropriate permissions. Some include:

  • · Voice and text chat permissions: You can manage who your child is able to speak with using Epic’s voice and text chat. You can select from ‘Everyone,’’“Friends and Teammates,’ or’“Friends Only’. Note: if you select ‘Friends and Teammates’, your child will be able to chat with all other players in the game session. You can also select ‘Nobody’ to disable chat entirely.
  • · Purchasing settings: You can require that your parental controls PIN is entered before real money purchases are made using Epic payment.
  • · Require your PIN for friend requests: You can require your PIN to be entered before your child sends or accepts Epic friend requests.
  • · Fortnite content ratings: In Fortnite, every island has an age rating, and you can determine which islands your child can visit based on those ratings.

Epic Games’ parental controls require you to set up a six-digit PIN through the Epic Account Portal or the Fortnite Parental Controls menu that we mentioned above. This makes it so that only you can change settings.

Fortnite’s voice and text-reporting feature allows anyone to submit evidence of misbehavior, and Epic may then take action against players who bully, harass or engage in other inappropriate behavior. For players under 18, the feature is automatically on in all voice and text chats.

Please note that, if your child is playing LEGO Fortnite Brick Life on a console or mobile device (Android worldwide or iOS in the EU), then you may also need to set controls for purchasing, communication limits, friend requests and more within that ecosystem, in addition to LEGO Fortnite Brick Life.

For example, if you turn off voice chat in Fortnite, your child may still be able to access voice chat using the chat system built into their console or mobile device. Android (Google Play), PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Windows offer their own parental controls, and we encourage you to follow the appropriate links to further customize your child’s experience.

Getting started with LEGO Fortnite Brick Life

To get started, download Fortnite on Mobile via the Epic Games App, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or PC.

If your child already plays Fortnite, then just open Fortnite and look for LEGO Fortnite Brick Life in the game’s menu.

Then you may need to create an Epic Games Account. If a player is under 13 (or their country’s age of digital consent – whichever is higher), their account will become a Cabined Account. A Cabined Account is an Epic account that’s designed to create a safe and inclusive space for younger players. Players with Cabined Accounts can still play LEGO Fortnite Brick life but won’t be able to access certain features such as voice chat until their parent or guardian provides consent.

We also suggest creating a LEGO account and linking that to create your Epic Games account. You can also link an existing LEGO account to an existing Epic Games account. Regardless, linking your Epic and LEGO accounts unlocks LEGO Insiders or LEGO Insiders Club (for younger players) and bonuses like the Explorer Emilie and Mr. Dappermint Outfits, which includes that LEGO Style for your child’s connected accounts.

You can also sign in with an existing LEGO, Epic Games, Nintendo, PlayStation or Xbox account.

Finally, you can take to the web and sign into an account through the official Epic Games site. That lets Epic Games know who your child is, across the many places where they can play LEGO Fortnite games, like consoles and mobile devices.

That’s it! Enjoy Brick Bay!
