Sustainable materials research

Having a positive impact on the planet is very important to us and you might have heard that we invested $150 million to establish a Sustainable Materials Center at our headquarters in Denmark. This new center focuses on exploring new sustainable materials for packaging as well as LEGO® bricks.

Our long-term vision states that by 2030, we want to have identified and implemented sustainable alternatives to the current raw materials used for our LEGO® products. This does not mean that we want to replace plastic. We want to find sustainable sources to replace our current oil-based raw materials so the plastic we use can be made from sustainable or bio-based raw materials.

In our search for more sustainable alternatives, we collaborate with companies and institutions that develop materials with a reduced environmental impact. The alternatives should offer the same safety, quality, durability and play experiences as our current materials.

As part of our sustainable resources mission, we introduced the first LEGO elements (trees, leaves and bushes) made from a plastic produced using sustainably sourced sugarcane. Read more about them here.
