The Joy of Rebuilding! Fresh Ideas for Your Old LEGO® Sets…

Unwrap top tips and ideas for ways you and your family can give old LEGO® builds a new life this Crimbo Limbo, the festive period between Christmas and New Year.

Building a LEGO set, brick by brick, is a creative, rewarding activity the whole family can enjoy together. But there’s so much more fun to be had than just following the instructions and completing your model!

LEGO bricks, in fact, offer endless play opportunities – all that’s required is imagination, creativity and a love for building! With no rules or limits, what you build and how you build is entirely up to you. But for families looking for an extra bit of inspiration this Crimbo Limbo, here are some ways you can make the most of your LEGO bricks and bring new life to your old LEGO sets…

Tweaks and changes

Once you’ve completed your build and displayed it proudly for everyone to see, the question becomes, “What to do next?”.

Before you take your build apart, see if you and your family can adapt and change it in interesting ways – you’ll be surprised how versatile it can be! Try swapping parts and elements around to give your creation an exciting new look. Maybe your medieval LEGO castle can become an alien palace? Or your LEGO animals can become mythical, hybrid creatures?!

Your redesign doesn't have to be perfect, or even close! Just use your imagination, get creative and have fun!

Expand your build!

Is your completed LEGO set really completed? Or can it be made bigger and even better?

See if you can develop your model by adding extra LEGO bricks. Experiment with any additional LEGO pieces you have or head over to Pick a Brick to choose the perfect LEGO bricks for expanding and customizing your build!

You can also add parts from other LEGO sets or, even better, see if you can merge multiple sets together to make one big, unique LEGO creation!

Your own creation!

After you’ve reworked and redesigned your LEGO build, take on the exciting challenge of building something completely new…

Depending on your LEGO set (or sets), you’ll have all kinds of different LEGO bricks to build in whichever way you want. So, use the opportunity to get lost in your imagination and make something super special! Here are a few tips to help guide you with your new creations…

  • Think about what builds are best suited to the colors you have. For example, browns and yellows lend themselves nicely to buildings and castles, whereas blues, whites and grays work perfectly for ocean-themed builds!
  • Pay attention to the different shapes you have. Are there specific pieces or larger parts that could make a key feature in your new model?
  • If you’ve got multiple LEGO sets, don’t limit yourself to just one. The more LEGO bricks you have, the more you can build!

Creative chaos!

Many people have one big LEGO brick collection that they’ve added to over the years, with parts and pieces from all kinds of sets! This can be a fantastic opportunity to let your imagination run wild and build all kinds of wonderful creations. But there’s another opportunity to be had, too – why not enjoy a wonderful, nostalgic family activity and rebuild your old LEGO sets from years ago?

Rebuilding sets from a huge mixed-up pile of LEGO bricks can be overwhelming, to say the least! So, here are some useful tips and tactics to help you get started…
  • Start with the instructions, so you can identify the pieces for each set. If you’ve lost them, search for PDF versions on LEGO.com or try the LEGO Builder app!
  • Not sure what sets your LEGO bricks are from? Sites such as BrickLink can help you identify LEGO sets based on your specific pieces.
  • Rather than diving straight into building, it may be easier to organize and separate the pieces beforehand, especially if you have thousands of pieces from larger sets! A popular way is to first sort by color, and then sort again by LEGO brick type.
  • Missing pieces? Fear not – use Pick a Brick to find and replace the LEGO bricks you need!

LEGO bricks really do provide endless building opportunities and unlimited creative fun! So, this Crimbo Limbo, we’re encouraging families everywhere to build, rebuild… and relive the joy of their favorite LEGO sets!
