Cool Ways to Build Your New Year’s Resolutions as a Family!

Celebrate your New Year’s resolutions together as a family with these fun LEGO® building ideas.

New Year is a wonderful time for families to unite, relax and have tons of fun together! For many, it’s also a special time for new beginnings, fresh starts and deciding what changes they can make for the better (aka their New Year’s resolutions). And we think that’s something worth celebrating.

This New Year, we’re encouraging families everywhere to have heaps of fun with their resolutions by turning them into exciting games and building activities! Discover some of our favorite ideas to try…

New Year’s Resolutions Tree

A true bonding activity – hang your New Year’s resolutions from the branches of a family-made LEGO tree!

Start by discussing how to build your tree from all your different LEGO bricks. Perhaps some of your LEGO sets have tree pieces to help you get going? If possible, try to build a branch for each family member!

Once you’ve finished your model, write down your New Year’s resolutions on paper tags or labels – and why not get crafty and make your own from card and string? Then hang the tags from the tree and choose a special spot to display your New Year build!

Tip: For top teamwork, choose roles for each family member, such as builder, label maker, resolution writer and tag hanger!

A New Year’s Family Home

The perfect activity for families looking to put their creativity, building skills and teamwork to the test!

The idea is simple – build a LEGO house together. But here’s the challenge… each room (or section) should be dedicated to your New Year’s resolutions! It’s a fun idea if everyone designs and creates their own section, which forms part of one big family build.

If someone’s resolution is to learn to cook, they could build an awesome, kitted-out kitchen! Or if one family member wants to get fit, they could build a garden perfect for exercise. The choice is yours – just remember, creativity is key!

Tip: Use minifigures to show family members practicing their New Year’s resolutions!

Guess the Res!

A two in one treat! Tuck into a creative building activity and a fun guessing game…

First things first – everyone must keep their New Year’s resolution a secret! Get the family to gather round, then players take turns to build a LEGO brick model that represents their resolution. For example, if someone wants to be more eco-friendly, they could build a tree. Or if they want to cut down on sugary snacks, they might build a chocolate bar!

While one player builds, the others try to guess their New Year’s resolution. Each correct guess is worth one point, and the person with the most points wins!

Celebrate Success!

Making New Year’s resolutions is one thing – sticking to them is another! Here’s an activity that encourages and celebrates commitment to the changes we make…

Make a list of the family’s New Year’s resolutions and decide how to keep track of each person’s progress. You could make a family chart, or even put pennies in jars each time someone puts their resolution into action!

Each week, celebrate your progress with a family LEGO play session. The person who has made the most progress, or who’s been the most committed to their resolution, gets to choose the LEGO set, game or building activity. Fun, right?

Make Play your New Year’s Resolution!

Family LEGO play sessions aren’t only fun – they bring everyone together to connect, form strong bonds, share special moments and create life-long memories. So, why not make a family New Year’s resolution… to make more time for playtime?

How often you are able to play together as a family will, of course, depend on your circumstance, commitments and lifestyle – but try to dedicate time each week or month, for some family LEGO builds. With thousands of sets to explore, and all kinds of LEGO-themed games and activities to tuck into, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
