How to build a path from finance to fun with LEGO® Bricks. Meet Jen 🌟
Fun and finance might not immediately strike you as two things that go together. Well, unless you’re just enjoying spending money. And who doesn’t, right? But if you have a curious mind, you might discover they’re not so far apart after all - as our Head of Learning and Development, Jen, found out they might not be as far apart as you think.
“I didn't always imagine myself here. My career started in financial services, which was interesting and fulfilling in its own way. However, there was always a part of me that craved something more purpose-driven, something that truly aligned with my passions."
That's when the LEGO Group came into the picture. A lifelong fan, Jen had long been an admirer of the brand's creativity and commitment to making a difference. She recalls fondly walking past the LEGO® Campus in Denmark with her family: a chance encounter that eventually sparked a career change.
“It started with a joke. I pointed at a random window and told my sons, ‘I'm going to work from that window’. It was a light-hearted comment that planted a seed. Soon after, I found myself looking for ways to translate my interest in joining the company into the next step in my career journey."
"That's how I ended up here, moving from Scotland to Denmark, working for the brand I love, surrounded by passionate, talented people.”
And has it lived up to her expectations and what does her role look like today?
“The LEGO Group is a truly welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is celebrated. I think about the workplace that I came into as a young graduate and how far society has come since then. As a gay woman with a family, I feel valued and supported. The company also prioritizes employee well-being, encouraging us to find the right balance between work and life."
“I have a team spanning nine different locations, so my role can be quite challenging at times. There isn't one time slot that works for everyone. So, we're really creative with how we get together, how we work virtually and where we're located, or co located.
“Right now, I’m leading a skills pilot, where we're piloting new technology to help us understand the skills we need, and the skills we have. The technology helps us to define that at a bigger scale using AI driven tools.”
So it sounds like the journey has been worthwhile?
"Going from working in financial services, which I really enjoyed, to working for my number one brand, a truly purpose-led and successful organization, has been a positive shift for me. The fact that I can walk into a shop, see LEGO sets, and know that my team has helped everyone in the organization to develop the skills and therefore to support the organization's success is hugely exciting."
“My leader is extremely passionate, and we've had lots of conversations about how we can make skills learning and development as engaging and impactful as possible for our colleagues. We've also discussed how I can continue to develop in my passion areas to ensure to ensure I keep my own skills fresh and developed."
“I'm excited to continue shaping my role and working with my team to create the most engaging and impactful learning experiences for our employees. There's always something new and exciting happening at the LEGO Group, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.”
