Bringing stories to life for vivid imaginations: Meet Mel 💡

Behind every playful campaign, TV ad, and social media post is a team of creative minds. Mel is one of them. As an Associate Producer, she’s able to indulge her passion for storytelling in all kinds of ways.

“I support the marketing teams in producing TV ads and social media videos.” When asked to explain her role in simpler terms, she laughs and adds:

“Working at the LEGO Group is all about collaboration. A longside a team of super-talented creatives from our in-house agency, we work with an external production company to bring our ideas to life. I’m sort of the middleman, managing both ends and making sure we make a video that everyone’s happy with.”

With its mix of project management and creative teamwork, Mel’s role keeps her on her toes. When she joined us, she had little experience in production.

“There are a lot of moving parts and people, and communication is key, so that’s where I come in. We make it come together.”

“I started out back in 2021 as an intern during peak COVID. I’d come via an advertising agency programme, and it was my first job. I didn’t really have any real impressions about the business, aside from it being an amazing toy company. But I found my feet without any trouble and things have moved on quickly since then. Within six months, I’d become an Associate Producer.”

“My role has developed a lot. I went from supporting small social media posts to managing my first TV commercial on my own. It’s been a big leap.”

Today, Mel says she feels lucky to be here and the satisfaction she gets from her role is clear:

“My role allows me to be super creative. Every project is about showcasing play through our products in a different way to children. For a recent commercial, we built all our props out of cardboard and used real minifigures instead of animation. It was good just to get crafting again.”

“I’ve worked on stuff I’m really proud of too. About two years ago, we created a video for International Day of the Girl with an all-female crew. That’s pretty unheard of in the film industry. It was great to see women in stereotypically male roles like lighting and camera. That felt special.”

Diversity and Inclusion is something that Mel takes to heart.

“I guess it’s become a common theme. I’m involved with the People of Colour Employee Advocacy Group, which is great. We share a real sense of community. It’s a space where people are really open to come up with any problems they’ve had and ask for advice or just share experiences. Everyone listens and I get a lot from it.”

"A huge positive is the people I've met along the way. For example, Elizabeth, she’s a lawyer and just super inspiring - she’s got like ten degrees and knows various languages. She encourages me to persevere and try out things that I might not be good at, just to give it a go.”

“And that’s basically what play’s all about. I'm currently working on a super fun project where we are collaborating with artists from so many places. I’m learning all the time.”

But it’s children who are Mel’s biggest teachers.

“They are just a constant source of inspiration. When you ask children how they’d sell a product, they come up with the wackiest storylines. It’s a reminder to try anything and think big.”
