Spotlight on our Asia-Pacific teams in Vietnam and China. #INWED2024 ✨
For Danna, Rose, Trang and Linh, engineering at the LEGO Group is more than a job. It’s a driving force behind innovation, problem-solving, and personal growth. To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we asked them to share with us their experience of working here and how it’s been transformative from their perspective.
Rose is one of our Senior Integration Managers at our manufacturing site in Jiaxing, China. Her role offers a solution into the world of breakthrough automation and technical setup for our products. This is a constant negotiation between achieving the best possible technical solution and maintaining an acceptable price point. Through her leadership training, Rose is empowered to navigate the complexities of her role with confidence. Her problem-solving mindset, fuelled by analysis, experimentation, precision, focus, bravery, and creativity, embodies the essence of engineering.
“If you want to change the world, you can. That’s what I believe. Every day, we are pursuing a better future with more efficiency and flexibility. We keep designing and redesigning all the time. One of my leaders told me, we should always think about what we can do next, explore the possibilities, and choose the best. In my eyes, engineering itself is a kind of play. We play with challenges, create ideas, and realize by our hands. It’s amazing how much you can learn from making LEGO® sets, especially in a modern industry nowadays.”
Through her leadership, Danna empowers her team to deliver high-quality molds and molding parameters, driving continuous improvement in the end-to-end reorder value chain. In her role, she brings innovation to processes and ensures the seamless transition from creative design to end product.
“Women are still a minority in the Engineering department. But that doesn’t prevent us from making an impact. As engineers, we play an important role in creating exciting bricks for consumers, as well as building new technology platforms to take the business to the next level.
“Engineering is a very diverse department of specialisms, from materials, chemistry and mechanical engineering to injection molding, industrial design and beyond. However, no matter which function we are in, we all share the same spirit and goal to deliver the best. I believe there will be more and more opportunities for women to have a transformative effect here.”
Material Logistic Project Manager, Trang, has shared her insights into the critical role of communication and risk management in engineering projects. Her work involves collaborating with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials, highlighting the importance of logistics in the engineering process. She also advocates for enhancing workplace flexibility for women and is a champion for diversity and inclusion.
“Engineering encourages me to evolve creative solutions. It pushes me to think outside the box and innovate. We work at the forefront of developing new approaches to sustainability, for instance. It also helps me to continue learning to keep up with the latest technologies - which is important for a growth mindset. The digital era is reshaping engineering and able to replace humans in many tasks. But this simply means our imagination and insight become more critical.
“We’re making progress towards enabling more flexibility for women too. This is a key factor in creating an inclusive environment. It means we’re supported at various life stages. A healthy work-life balance and the option to work remotely is particularly beneficial for those who may need to care for family members.”
Linh Do’s story is a testament to resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As a single mother who relocated for her career, she emphasises the importance of understanding and acknowledging the unique experiences of women in the workplace.
“Engineering has played a pivotal role in shaping my career journey. It has equipped me with a robust set of technical skills, honed my problem-solving abilities, and fostered a mindset of innovation and collaboration. Through engineering, I've had the opportunity to work on diverse projects, tackle complex challenges, and continuously expand my expertise. It’s given me the tools I need for success and a sense of resilience and adaptability.
She has some inspiring advice to share too:
“Follow your curiosity. Embrace your passion for understanding how things work. Engineering offers endless opportunities to innovate, solve problems, and make an impact. Enjoy the process of learning and discovery. Your creativity and perseverance will lead to exciting and fulfilling career paths. Remember, the skills you develop as an engineer will not only shape your future but also contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing issues. Pursue your dreams with confidence, and let your curiosity guide you.”
