Testing a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 sensor
Here are the steps to follow to test your LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 sensors.
- Turn on the EV3 Intelligent Brick.
- Connect the EV3 Brick to your computer using the USB cable.
- Connect the sensor you want to test to one of the Input ports (1, 2, 3 or 4).
- Open the EV3 software.
- Open a new project.
- Click on the 'Port View' icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
- You should see your sensor connected to one of the Input ports.
- Click on the sensor in the 'Port View' window.
- Test your sensor and see if the values change in the 'Port View'. For example, push down on a touch sensor or expose your light sensor to different levels of light. You’ll know your sensor is working when the values change.

If you don’t see the sensor connected, connect the sensor to another port. If it shows up when connected to the other port, there may be a problem with the first port.
If the sensor doesn't react to testing at all, it could be a problem with the sensor itself or the cable connecting it to the P-Brick. Try swapping out the cable with another to find out which.
