Delving into Mechanical Engineering

We recently held a unique crowdcast event to say Hej to our awesome and talented Mechanical Engineers. The dream team responsible for making our iconic LEGO® sets and ideas a reality.
Our event featured an amazing line-up of colleagues sharing some inspirational insights on the projects they’ve been working on. From cutting edge projects in additive manufacturing and 3D printing, right through to innovative sustainable manufacturing and product safety measures.

Here are just some of the standout observations they shared about this vital work:

Mandy, Technology Manager 👋

One of the most unusual projects I worked on was to answer what the current capabilities and limitations of LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) are. I’ve fallen in love with the technology we use – such as 3D printing our components! We always embrace a flexible, creative mindset here at the LEGO Group which is awesome, without ever compromising the quality of the product.

Tore, Mechanical Engineer 👋

I work in developing our novelty elements – using CAD and 2D drawings for each individual LEGO® brick. We must ensure that the quality and safety of each component is fantastic, while keeping both design and manufacturing happy. We deal with safety issues with thorough tests, going back to the drawing board to rectify any problems and create outstanding solutions.

Karina, Junior Mechanical Engineer 👋

I love looking at the elements I’m working with. In my team we’re working towards transitioning to sustainable LEGO bricks as part of the LEGO Group’s sustainable material projects. Working on elements is so much more complicated and involved than you imagine – even for the smallest piece like a dog bone I worked on, there are so many steps in the process. But we got there in the end, and it’s now in transition.

Luis Carlos, Metrology Engineer👋

Metrology is the science of measuring, and in our case, this means using the best methods to inspect all elements. We work to ensure everyone is aligned and using the same methods across the LEGO Group – minimising any uncertainty and creating the very best play experience. It can take a few rounds to get the desired solution. I feel very at home here. Amazing colleagues in this great company – it really puts me in a comfortable position
