Pharrell Williams Over The Moon Paris Event

Billund, Denmark, 19 September 2024: The LEGO Group and visionary artist and designer Pharrell Williams came together in Paris to celebrate their recently announced collaboration and the launch of their co-designed LEGO® set Over the Moon.

A celebration of creativity and infinite possibilities, the event, held at Paris’ renowned Espace Niemeyer, was curated by founder of pioneering Parisian concept store Colette Sarah Andelman. Bringing together some of the world’s most curious creatives, attendees included: Actor Kevin Dias, DJ Bob Sinclar and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter.

During the evening, Pharrell joined The LEGO Group’s Vice President of Global Brand Development Alero Akuya in an intimate conversation where he spoke for the first time publicly about his collaboration with the LEGO Group and his LEGO® Over the Moon set.

Regarding the inspiration behind the Over the Moon set, and why he chose a rocket ship, Pharrell revealed:

“When I was four or five years old, I used to stare outside the window of Atlantis Apartments where I lived. I used to stare into the night sky because the stars were so vivid, and I had all these questions that my mother really couldn’t answer – how far does space go, why is this star blue and why is this star twinkling? For me, space always represented this… space. It never really had all the answers so it stood out to me as something that was always fresh. You could come up with a new question every night if you wanted to. In fact, my favourite part of our PIECE BY PIECE biopic film is the scene where I’m out in space.”

Expanding on the upcoming PIECE by PIECE film, Pharrell said: “My favourite thing about the film is the idea that I get to tell my story through the guise of LEGO animation. LEGO sets are something that I played with when I was really young but LEGO play ignites and connects with the inner child of anyone, of any age, 8 to 80.”

Describing what he hopes people take away from the Over The Moon set, Pharrell explained: “If the set inspires you and sets you free then I’m honoured. I want everyone to know that it is never too late to think about what your dream is now, and now is better than never. You have no idea what is on the other side of this day, and I believe that everything that you’ve ever wanted is waiting for you.”

Over The Moon is a space shuttle with a golden canopy and a vibrant jet stream of colours and is made up of three parts, with each holding a special meaning for Pharrell. The black-and-gold shuttle symbolizes limitless potential, taking off and transporting you anywhere you can imagine.

The bright and vibrant colours of the jet stream symbolize the imagination, creativity, and power of play to fuel your way. And finally, befitting Pharrell’s relentless pursuit to push boundaries and ensure that everyone can feel represented and seen, the LEGO® Over the Moon set features the widest range of customizable minifigure skin tones. 50 Minifigure heads are included, 30 of which were especially created for this set. The new set also includes several brand-new colour-piece combos, created specifically for this project, such as the custom-made windscreen canopy made in drum-lacquered gold colour for the first time ever.

The LEGO Group VP of Global Brand Development, Alero Akuya said: “This is more than a product, it really is about inspiring everyone to unlock their imagination through LEGO play. Our mission together is to inspire creativity and curiosity which as Pharrell says, is the life force in all of us.”

The launch of Over the Moon comes ahead of the release of Focus Features’ PIECE BY PIECE, which will debut in US theatres on 11 October, and internationally beginning 6 November. Directed by Academy Award® winning filmmaker Morgan Neville and featuring new original music from Pharrell, PIECE BY PIECE is a unique cinematic experience that invites audiences on a vibrant journey through the life of cultural icon Pharrell Williams. Developed from Pharrell’s singular vision, PIECE BY PIECE defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO® world where anything is possible.

Pharrell’s partnership with the LEGO Group will extend to his non-profit foundation, YELLOW, which works to even the odds for children through education. This collaboration will see the launch of a new LEGO Build the Change global challenge, bringing more creative play to kids worldwide.
