The Making of LEGO® DREAMZzz™

The making of LEGO® DREAMZzz™...

The LEGO® DREAMZzz™ show is an expansive fantasy IP, centered on a group of ordinary kids who discover that the dream world is not only real but contains everything anyone has ever dreamed! Mateo, Izzie, Cooper and Logan spend their nights venturing into the dream world to save kids from the evil Nightmare King...

The LEGO DREAMZzz sets include building instructions with comic-style illustrations, inviting kids into the story and actively giving them the freedom to choose how they want to complete their set. Just the bricks, the booklet and your kids.

How did LEGO DREAMZzz begin?

Our brand-new theme has been in the making since 2019 and is by far the most researched theme we have ever had.

In those 3.5 years we have consulted with more than 30,000 kids and shoppers on everything from the story content and the play experience to the story-led building instructions and the products. It’s been as rewarding a process as it was challenging (you try keeping something TOP secret while telling 30,000 people about it…)

We learned through research that dreams helps kids to explore their creativity and imagination without limitations, because in dreams, anything is possible.

Two-thirds of the kids we spoke to described dreams as being an important way for them to unlock their creativity, while also to help them process complex emotions.

Fast forward and LEGO DREAMZzz was born...

What’s the story of LEGO DREAMZzz?

Our story focuses on a group of middle schoolers who, after one fateful night, uncover the ancient secret that the dream world exists.

Yes, perhaps the most important thing to know about LEGO DREAMZzz is that the dream world is real. It’s a place consisting of diverse realms waiting to be explored, from the futuristic Cyber Realm to the super-sweet Candy Realm.

Each is teeming with incredible creatures that only the boundlessness of dreams could create. And everything you’ve ever dreamed, whether you remember it or not, actually exists in that world. Which is great news!

However, as with any good story, there are also bad guys. The dream world is being threatened by the Nightmare King and his Grimspawn Army, who are corrupting the dreams of sleeping kids. They are the nightmares who want to take over the dream world… and the waking world too...

But back to our heroes...

By day, they live out the same trials and tribulations as every other kid. Hallway dramas, friendship issues, homework deadlines – the kind of problems every kid will recognize from their lives.

At night, their concerns could not be less typical. Mateo, Izzie and their friends must save innocent dreamers and take on the Nightmare King by mastering the power of dream crafting while in the dream world. This ability requires creators to focus all their inspiration to conjure up objects, tools, vehicles, companions – anything you can imagine – while dreaming.

It’s a process that requires the kids to put faith in their skills and overcome their individual limitations. Like Izzie’s impulsiveness, Cooper’s perfectionism, or Mateo’s fear of judgement.

And of course, as the kids all grow as crafters and creators in the dream world, so do they grow as people in the real world.

What about the sets?

So, as you can probably tell by now, the LEGO DREAMZzz IP introduces not just one but two new worlds – the reality-based waking world and the fantastical dream world.

Each set contains the best of both worlds, mashing up different passions, resulting in models that look like no other LEGO set before it and which encourage kids to choose what they want to build.

The sets are designed to encourage builders to act just like the characters do in the show – by taking something that exists and combining it into something brand new and unique. Like Mrs. Castillo’s food truck van which, in the dream world, becomes combined with her pet tortoise!

For LEGO DREAMZzz, we’ve changed the way we structure the building instructions. About 80% of an initial LEGO DREAMZzz build is completed by following instructions. However, this section now looks almost like a comic book, featuring illustrations that inspire kids to build along with the story. Then there is a point in each building instruction where the choice of how they complete the set is left up to them.

The idea is that kids will be in the mind frame to continually tinker with their builds during their play. Like when Mateo needed a motorbike in the dream world, so he turned his gooey companion Z-Blob into one.

The illustrations and adjusted building flow will present kids with inspiration to solve missions and place them in a problem-solving mindset, to really challenge them to push the limits of their creativity.

An added bonus with LEGO DREAMZzz is that it includes a combination of passions in each set, which has not been seen before with an out-of-the-box LEGO build.

Because whether a kid loves animals, vehicles, space, architecture or… well… you get the idea… there is a build for them with LEGO DREAMZzz sets.

Dreaming is universal, everyone has dreams, and this is why LEGO DREAMZzz invites all kids to partake, with no child left behind.

We’ll see you over in the dream world! (If you see the Nightmare King, tell him we aren’t in…)
