Aviation inspiration! Exploring the design of Travel Moments

It’s official! The set inspired by LEGO® Masters Season 4’s winning build is finally ready for takeoff (geddit?)!

Christopher Lee and Robert Zhang beat eleven other pairs of builders to the win with their eye-catching master build, the ‘World Wonderliner’, (you can read more about it here) which has now inspired its very own, quirkily adapted LEGO set. So, get comfy in your first-class seat as we look at this striking design!

After winning the show, the brick-loving duo were flown to LEGO headquarters in Billund, Denmark, to see how LEGO designers had adapted their gargantuan winning build – an 8ft x 8ft (243cm x 243cm) plane – into a brilliant new set.

Christopher explains, “There were plans to make a gigantic-sized plane, but with some other LEGO planes being released recently, the designers wanted to do something a little more unique.”

“The concept began as the plane on a 2D world map, surrounded by world landmarks – kind of similar to what we had built sticking out of the top and middle sections of our plane. Eventually, they decided to scrap the world landmarks altogether – there were simply too many to choose from!”

Just like Christopher and Robert’s winning master build, the set’s final design is super family-oriented. “Growing up, travel was a huge part of mine and my family’s life”, says Christopher. Robert, who took many trips to China while growing up, added, “Traveling gave me new perspectives and shaped a lot of the morals I have today.”

Thanks to the new LEGO feature, Build Together, up to five people can build the set at once. Plus, with ten photo holders for displaying treasured holiday snaps or tickets, it’s fully customizable, depending on where your family has traveled, and where they’d like to travel in future. You can even mount the set on the wall, or display it completely flat on a table, in pride of place!

As Boone Langston – one of the LEGO designers who worked on the set – put it, “We imagine this set will help families celebrate the places they’ve been, and dream about the places they want to go!”

Congrats, Christopher and Robert! We can’t wait to make fun, family travel moments with your set!
